Breaking Away from that Soccer Mom Stigma
While some women wear the label of Soccer Mom as a badge of honor, others are tired of stigma of being the perfect minivan driving, heath food advocate that takes their children to and from sporting events. The idea that a whole genre of women are grouped together because they have positive goals of being a professional woman and a caring mother at the same time have many women angry.
There are websites that fight against the name and the actions and symbols that are associated with the title. Many feminist groups are furious stating that if a professional, caring parent is to have a genre title, than why is it only women who are targeted. They contend that there is just as many ‘soccer dads’ as there is soccer moms.
The truth is that the term soccer mom is just a term. It conotates a resemblance of the upper middle class or the lower upper class. It is all fantasy. A Stefford Wives atmosphere does not exist in the suburbs and neighborhoods of American and why ridicule a culture that can not only provide for their child both emotionally and financially and at the same time be able to live fulfilled lives as professional adults. So if you are in favor or against the term soccer mom, let it go. Society and the media will find a new segment of the population to be against and to ridicule and the term will fade with time.
